Fractures Q & A

What is a fracture?

Fractures are a loss of continuity in your bones. Whether this occurs as a hairline crack that is barely noticeable, or shattering of the bone, these are all considered fractures. Fractures occur when our bones are impacted by forces greater than they can bear. In order for these injuries to heal correctly, the fractured bone requires either a brace, splint or cast in order to immobilize the area for aligned healing. More intensive fractures can require surgical procedures to correct them, there it is extremely important to receive a diagnosis promptly. Most common treatments begin with a medical exam and x-rays, in order for proper treatment. At Arizona Foot and Ankle Medical Center, all injuries are carefully looked over and treated.

Is there a difference between a fractured bone and a broken bone?

While this is a common misconception, there is no difference between a broken bone and a fractured bone. Both a break and fracture involve the loss of continuity in your bones, therefore even a small barely distinguishable fracture is deemed as a break. These terms can be used interchangeably for these injuries.
